Go Vikings.

Yep. Put music on another thread. TY

Sweens and others were posting about a band called Love that I never heard of. I had no problem with it. Big O was posting about Yumi Matsutoya. I had no problem with it. Double Standards.

Bullshit.

Nobody was posting about anything other than in reference. You took liberties with it bc that is what you do. No-one was looking to expand on it but you can't help yourself. Quit your attention seeking behavior.

I think we have studs and quality at all 3 levels of defense. I think Barr has a career year. Look for our defense to be able to carry a team ala Balt or TB...but not need to.

Posting under a pseudonym is an indication of both insecurity and deception.

I used to be a Danimal, that played fake football as a defensive end, named Damien NataS… with Ian Joseph…

Wannabe.

No kidding?

In April I was on Route 66. Before and during the trip I wanted to get off the path and see Sedona - one of those places I'd like to see. I even tried unsuccessfully to get an AIRBNB there. But I ran into some mechanical issues and spent the day in Flagstaff.

You are simply a jackass. A troll starved for attention and needy for validation. A pathetic individual enjoying the longest run of negative strokes ever seen on this sports board (weirdly, you will think 'longest run' means you won).

Of course you are allowed, however at the point this is getting it’s probably I’ll advised. And even more I’ll advised to ask if it’s ok.
How about keeping it to football for a few days? Just a suggestion for everyone here. These are things 13 yr olds do that feel they must validate themselves. So maybe it is best just not to even reply to a post non football related, yes in my opinion.

We still have a fair amount of money out there but it seems odd I hear few rumors now. I’d have to think Spielman has something he’s working on.

You are correct in everything you said in this post. I was being snarky asking if I was allowed to post about it. It's just people are going off the rails trying to police the posts around here. I've always liked that we can go a bit off topic. Those conversations have been some of the best ever on this message board. Other times not so good. There's not much to talk about football related right now until training camp opens.

No one is going off of the rails...post music in its own thread....remember you and Matt posting country music history in the Twins thread until you were reminded.

We know you love talking music; quit hijacking threads to do it.

What I think is hilarious is that some posters talk about 13 year olds but don't know the difference between ill and I'll.

I'm sure this will start a fight and get us back to football

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher calls Vikings ‘perfect set-up’ for Kellen Mond

By CHRIS TOMASSON | ctomasson@pioneerpress.com | Pioneer Press
PUBLISHED: June 28, 2021 at 9:15 a.m. | UPDATED: June 28, 2021 at 1:32 p.m.

When an NFL draft party was held for Kellen Mond on April 30, about 125 people squeezed into the family home in San Antonio. That included one special guest.
Jimbo Fisher, who coached Mond at Texas A&M, flew in on a private plane to see where the quarterback would end up on the second day of the NFL draft. With the No. 66 overall pick in the third round, Mond landed with the Vikings.

“It was fun, it was exciting,” Fisher said in a phone interview about being with Mond when he was drafted. “You get to be there and watch not only his eyes when he got drafted but his parents’ eyes and all the people who loved him and brought him up. He had little league coaches, Pop Warner coaches, junior high, everybody there. … And just seeing all those folks (and) just seeing the joy in his eyes to be able to have the opportunity he dreamed of.”

Fisher, accompanied in San Antonio by his wife Courtney, said it was the second time as a coach he has gone to the home of a former player on draft night. Fisher, who was Florida State’s coach from 2010-17 before heading to Texas A&M, traveled to Birmingham, Ala., in 2015, when ex-Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston was the No. 1 pick by Tampa Bay and elected to celebrate at home rather than attend the draft in Chicago.

Fisher has gone to the draft site to support players on several occasions.

Mond was a four-year starter with the Aggies, the final three spent under Fisher. Mond’s father, Kevin Mond, said the family was flattered by the coach flying in for the draft party.

“That says a lot about the respect that the man has for Kellen Mond,” he said. “He didn’t have to do that, but that showed you the relationship they have. They’ve been through the battles and struggles together. They embraced each other. … To me, he’s simply the best college coach there is.”

Fisher said he wanted to be on hand to offer thanks to Mond for what he meant to the program. In 2020, the Aggies went 9-1 and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation.

“I have so much appreciation and respect for him and his family and what they stand for, and the way he has elevated our program in changing the culture of an organization,” Fisher said. “He had as big of an effect on it as anybody, and his and I relationship I thought was very, very, very close, and the family is the same way with my family. When you coach them that way, they become like part of your kids, too.”

With the Vikings, Mond will learn under starting quarterback Kirk Cousins. He will have the opportunity to claim the backup job when training camp gets underway July 28.

“Being behind Kirk, who’s a great veteran, who’s been productive, I think it’s a perfect set-up for (Mond),” Fisher said. “I’m happy. … I think Minnesota’s one of the top organizations in (the NFL), and I think that’s very important where you go and play pro football. I think (Mike Zimmer is) a great football coach, a great football mind.”

Leading into the draft, Fisher said the Vikings were ”one of five or six or seven teams” that he thought might select Mond. He communicated with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko before the draft.

Fisher also has talked about Mond over the years to close friend Gary Kubiak, a former star quarterback at Texas A&M who was Minnesota’s offensive coordinator in 2020 until he retired after the season. Fisher said it will benefit Mond that the Vikings run a similar offensive system to what Mond had with the Aggies.

In 46 college games, Mond threw for 9,661 yards with 71 touchdowns. In 10 games last season, he threw for 2,282 yards and 19 touchdowns with just three interceptions and had a career-high completion percentage of 63.3.

“I’m just very excited for him,” Fisher said. “I think he’s in a great situation with a great organization, and I think he’s going to have a great career, I really do. He’s an unbelievable character, quality young man, and he’s a heck of a football player.”

4 ‘Surprise’ Players That Could Start for Vikings in September
Photo of Dustin Baker Dustin BakerJun 27, 20211 3 minutes read

Aside from adding a free-agent defensive end or third wide receiver, the Minnesota Vikings roster is relatively ‘set’ from a depth standpoint. It’s nearing July, and general manager Rick Spielman has pulled off a studious mission in fortifying the depth chart, especially on the defensive side of things.

Onlookers to the team have theories as to who will start and where, firming up plans for the superstars like Dalvin Cook, Danielle Hunter, Eric Kendricks, Justin Jefferson, Harrison Smith, and Adam Thielen to assume their roles.

Yet, other spots aren’t crystal clear. The training camp and preseason events — which will actually happen this year, unlike last summer — will determine the fate of some wait-and-see position battles.

These are the four men that could surprisingly ascend the depth chart, landing starting gigs before the first month of the season caps.

Write this down: Patrick Jones II is the direct replacement for Yannick Ngakoue via trade. Late last summer, Spielman sent a 2nd-Round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Ngakoue, shoring up the other side of the defensive line opposite Danielle Hunter. Well, Hunter was lost for the season, and Ngakoue never really fit inside Minnesota’s defense. Resultingly, Spielman flipped Ngakoue to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2021 3rd-Round draft choice — and that turned out to be Jones II.

Stephen Weatherly is the presumptive RDE, but his career resume indicates he is not an ironclad specimen for the job. The Mike Zimmer-led Vikings rarely start rookie EDGE rushers out of the gate. However, that’s generally because men like Everson Griffen, Brian Robison, and Danielle Hunter already own(ed) a stranglehold on the job. Weatherly is more vulnerable. With a good training camp, it is feasible that Jones II could rise to power.

This brash man doesn’t fill the role of backup anything amid career stops with the Washington Football Team, Green Bay Packers, or Kansas City Chiefs. Breeland is a starter, no matter the destination.

If he started with the 2019 world champion Chiefs — hint: he did — why in the hell wouldn’t he start for the Super Bowl-less Vikings? Stuff to think about.

The “problem” is that Zimmer already has a potpourri of players that also hope to start. Patrick Peterson, Cameron Dantzler, and Mackensie Alexander come to mind. Even a theoretical exoneration of Jeff Gladney would thicken the plot.

Breeland signed on the dotted line with Spielman to start at CB2, probably next to Patrick Peterson. This battle will be among training camp’s most interesting.

Chazz Surratt (LB)

Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr will start at Cincinnati in Week 1 — you can just jot that down in blood right now. After those two Bruins, though, the weakside linebacker projection is murky. Nick Vigil, a free-agent addition from the Los Angeles Chargers, is the frontrunner.

But teammates are high on Chazz Surratt, a rookie linebacker from the University of North Carolina. Kendricks said recently said about his teammate Surratt:

“I feel like oftentimes that shows the kind of athlete the player is and just their football IQ and their football comfortability. … I also played quarterback in high school. … You’d think it would be a tougher transition, but you’re actually very in tune with the game.”

And that’s high praise from one of the team’s most esteemed leaders — a soundbite that certainly wasn’t required for Kendricks to fling out of the general public.

If “all Surratt has to do” is dethrone Vigil, perhaps the Tar Heel will see early starting action.

Believe it when you see it on this one. The Vikings — like clockwork — opt for a WR4 or WR5-like caliber WR3s heading into a given season. They do it every year. From Laquon Treadwell, Bisi Johnson, to Chad Beebe, Zimmer is content with a serviceable WR3, not an exciting one.

Because of speed, Smith-Marsette is a tantalizing option should he climb the ranks at training camp. This gig will be the easiest to win among suspect starting jobs as the team vividly knows what it’s getting in Johnson and Beebe.

Smith-Marsette was chosen in the 5th Round of the 2021 NFL Draft — the same round as Stefon Diggs six years ago — so emotional parallels can be drawn to the now-departed-to-Buffalo former Viking.

Fans would celebrate a breakout party from Smith-Marsette because Vikings history used to fancy good WR3s — like Jake Reed.

Statistically speaking, Kirk Cousins is a very effective NFL quarterback. What do you think he needs to do this season to get to the level of an Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, or Drew Brees-type quarterback? Thank you!
— Tom from Blaine, Washington

Tom leads us off with a great question, and one I'm sure many Vikings fans are wondering about as the 2021 season looms. I don't want to steal the infamous quote of late Raiders owner Al Davis, but when it comes to expectations for Cousins this year, it's "Just win, baby."
The quarterback is entering his fourth season in Purple and has put up plenty of impressive stats in the league. He's thrown for at least 25 touchdowns in each of his previous three seasons (and is on a run of six straight seasons hitting that mark). Cousins has also thrown for 4,000 yards in two of his three years in Purple, and has eclipsed that standard in five of his part six overall seasons. The 32-year-old is also usually among the league leaders in completion percentage and fewest interceptions thrown, although his rough start to the 2020 season inflated that latter stat a bit a year ago.

But amazingly, Cousins has exactly a .500 record in 104 career starts at 51-51-2. With the Vikings, he has been better at 25-21-1, but that three-year stretch includes just one playoff win.
There's no doubt Cousins is among the top half of quarterbacks in the league, and there's an argument he's in the top 10 if you ask me.
But if he really wants to get to the level of those three quarterbacks Tom mentioned, it's simple: win.
What do all of them have? A Super Bowl ring.
Cousins, of course, will need help around him — as every quarterback does. The Vikings went all-in on revamping their defense this offseason, so that unit should be able to give him a few extra possessions this year.
There are also a boatload of skill players around him, and Minnesota has invested deeply in the offensive line in recent drafts to help protect him up front.
The pieces appear to be in place for Cousins to be able to take the Vikings on a deep playoff run this season. I have no doubt he would prefer that over gaudy statistics.

I am just wondering why the Vikings have not signed an experienced offensive guard or tackle. Yes, they drafted one of each but they are rookies and there is no experience behind them.
— Gerald Ruzicka

And speaking of that offensive line in front of Cousins, Gerald has an inquiry about that position group.
As I mentioned above, nearly all of Minnesota's resources in free agency this offseason went to the defense.
Minnesota brought back previous players who were set to become free agents (Rashod Hill and Dakota Dozier) and traded a sixth-round pick to acquire interior lineman Mason Cole from Arizona.
I'm not saying any of those players are Pro Bowlers, but they have 76 combined starts between them. Cole leads the way with 32, while Dozier has 27 and Hill has 17.
Hill (left tackle) and Dozier (right guard) worked with the first-team offense during the offseason program, but rookies Christian Darrisaw (left tackle) and Wyatt Davis (right guard) could certainly earn starting roles with strong performances in training camp and the preseason.

If that does end up being the case, those three would be solid backups with the experience you are looking for.

GMFB: For This Season To Be A Success, The Vikings Must _____________?
I'm wondering if there is any chance that the Vikings will add a veteran third wide receiver?? Our team is resembling the '98 Vikings team, and with a reliable third option besides the two tight end players, it would make us almost unstoppable. What do you think?
— Tim Foreseen

High praise from Tim, but I'm not ready to compare the potential of this offense to what the 1998 unit did. That group boasted of multiple Hall of Famers and seemed to score points like they were playing a video game.
As for a potential wide receiver addition, it's certainly a possibility. We also covered WR3 in last week's Mailbag, and an established veteran would certainly boost that group.
The Vikings pro scouting department keeps tabs on players that are still available. Perhaps the Vikings go through the first week or so of training camp to see how young players progress before determining it they want to bring in a veteran.
As always, it's worth pointing out that with Adam Thielen, Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Irv Smith, Jr., and Tyler Conklin, the Vikings already have a strong group of options in the passing game.
The Vikings third wide receiver might actually end up being the fifth or sixth option in the passing game because of the talent and skill of other players.

What was the player feedback on the white soft-sided helmets? Anything significant?
— Kathye in Mandan, North Dakota

Great question from Kathye, who hits on a topic that Craig Peters wrote about for Vikings.com at the beginning of the offseason program.
If you want the details on the soft-padded helmets, you can find that story here.
We really didn't ask the players about them other than that first week, but from my view, players seemed to enjoy the less-physical nature of practices and wearing them.
Each NFL season is a grind, and the 2021 version will be even more so with a 17th game. Keeping players free and clear from unnecessary extra contact in May and June could go a long way to maintaining good health when it really matters.
My best guess is that we see something similar next year since the players seemed to like them. And Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer certainly liked the work that was put in during practices, as he canceled the final mandatory minicamp session as a result of their hard work.

Do you see us putting the rookie [Jaylen Twyman] on IR for the season since he was shot? Does that mean we can keep more players like Sheldon Richardson and let Twyman go after season?
— Warren W.

Before I get into the football aspect of the Vikings rookie sixth-round pick, the most important aspect about Twyman is that he is apparently OK and expected to make a full recovery.
As for what impact the shooting has on his rookie season, that remains to be seen. The hope would be that Twyman is healthy and can participate in full, but he might end up missing some time to heal from his injuries. He might compete for and make the 53-man roster, or maybe he ends up landing on the practice squad to further develop in 2021.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that Twyman's best-case scenario as a rookie — before the shooting — was to be a rotational guy on third down to help generate pressure as a pass rusher. With Richardson now signed alongside Michael Pierce and Dalvin Tomlinson, Twyman now has a chance to learn under a handful of veteran players at his position.
The Vikings do like Twyman's potential, but his health is the top priority at the moment. How he fits into the team's future plans will all be sorted out down the road.
