o'neill's contract extension caused his 2021 cap hit to grow from $2m to $6.9m - and our o-line still sucks...we are presently $300k over the cap and have virtually no more reasonable ways to create cap space.....

unless we consider extending cousins again reasonable....

RIP Steve Riley, our starting LT for 10 years, including two Superbowl starts. Passed at age 68. No cause of death given.

I remember people being pissed after the 1st few games of Jefferson last year that we traded away Diggs.....impatient.

Lots of changes on the Oline, lots of changes on the Defense....hope to see improvements each week that lead to wins...that is the key.

I resolutely believe that things can improve.

Not that you would notice or care, but I have been saying for weeks if not months that all the changes would take time to coalesce.

My first comment Monday after the CIN game was essentially, this doesn't tell us who we are as a team yet.

Again, my bitching and moaning are directed at the regime's half-assed methodology towards the OL. The results speak for themselves.

DL bad last year? OK ... even with all world Hunter and top 2020 fa signing Pierce returning, lets add Tomlinson, Richardson, Weatherly, Griffen and draft Jones and Robinson.

OL bad last year? OK ... lets draft an OT early to replace our 2nd best OL (who we let walk) and throw a middle round G at Dozier Bradbury Cleveland ... and we'll be good.

Do you not see the disparity?

Its nobody's fault that Darrisaw has a lingering injury ... its probably nobody's fault that the injury was missed in the pre-draft process ...

It is nobody's fault but our own that after missing TC and going in for a second procedure, we did nothing to increase depth or competition at the LT position.

Last year Hunter goes on IR and we grab Ngakoue ... Darrisaw goes down and we put Zack freakin' Bailey on the practice squad.

It isn't always just directed at you.

Darrisaw won't be gone long enough to put on the IR so who do you want to cut right now and replace? Most of the line is pretty young so they chose to go that route instead of grabbing older guys (Kyle Long) that are injury risks.

No ofcourse not, but since you had a follow on post directly related to the exchange we were having ... I responded from my point of view.

I forget how short your attention span is.

Usually when you aren't quoted there is a reason.....it isn't directed at you. Maybe it is the opposite and you want attention?

FYI, the opposite of a short attention span is a long attention span. Not a need for attention.

Also, are you suggesting we should only respond to posts that quote or address us directly?

We argued ... you posted ... I wasted my time trying to give you a full response because you had already seen a squirrel and bolted in a different direction.

No biggie.

Nah; there is a reason I quit quoting you. Digs at anyone who doesn't agree with you. I don't agree with your opinion so it is over at that point.

I don't 'dig' at everyone who doesn't agree with me ... there are a lot of posters that hold opposite opinions to where I come from ... that I respect, that I enjoy debating with ... some that have digged and some I have thrown digs at.

this site would suck without the differences of opinion and different angles.

If I feel attacked ... or get frustrated with someone being intentionally or unintentionally obtuse ... yes, I can over-react and put them down ... wish I didn't take it so personally, wish I was more successful trying to be above that.

I'll leave it and you at that.

Heineke starting for Wash.
Reminds me a bit of Case... limited in some ways but makes plays and guys make plays for him... fun to watch.

On the play in which Washington scores their last touchdown you can see Heineke look left to his RB in the flat. The RB is wide open with about ten yards of open field in front of him. Heineke looks back downfield and puts the ball high and in outside where only his receiver can get it. Touchdown. A lesser QB takes the dump off and maybe the team only gets a field goal keeping the team from winning with a field goal at the end of the game. Yet on the stat sheet it looks like a 12 yard completion and the fans say ‘he did everything he could to put the team in a position to win’ when really he didn’t.

I agree with your underlying notion - if I interpret it correctly – Cousins would have taken the 70% (arbitrary) chance of completion throw underneath over the 20% (arbitrary) chance of success throw down the field ... even though in theory, if both passes were completed, the underneath throw had a 20 % chance of success compared to the 100% of success by the throw down the field.

I also agree with beo's take that there was a little bit of 2017 Case to him last night in the way Heineke was trying to go after the defense ... not just successfully execute plays.

That said, we are just hoping for the pocket not collapse on every down / not to consistently see rushers and blitzers coming in free ... Heinke had a lot more time / better protection over the whole course of the game. It has to be a factor.

Griffin OUT for Sunday's game. Says he had a car accident on the way to practice swerving to miss a deer in the road and has concussion. Barr also OUT for Sunday which makes the 16th consecutive game he's been out. Also OUT are Darrisaw and Hand. Kendricks is questionable.

we should have signed kj wright when we had a chance a few weeks back...barr is finished with the Vikings...he'll get one more deal for medium money from another team and fade on them....

i'm afraid that darrisaw is a pussy - always injured, take the 1st round money, and run...i sense a flop in the making....

No red flags here ...

"One of the top offensive tackle prospects in the 2021 NFL draft played through a significant injury last season, and had surgery to repair another one this offseason.

Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw suffered a groin injury late in the 2020 season but kept playing, and had surgery to repair a core muscle injury back in January, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport notes that Darrisaw got a clean bill of health at the NFL’s medical checks earlier this month, which should bode well for his chances of still going in the first round Thursday night."

it's amazing that this year we lost two of our 1st round picks from our last four drafts - both cornerbacks....

holton hill is a free agent...just a thought....

The first round busts and non-factors since 2016 have arguably kept us from being a top tier team.

Treadwell
Hughes
Bradbury
Gladney
Darrisaw

Another issue was the large contracts doled out to dang near everyone on defense a few years ago. Although I did not fault the signings in terms of keeping the player or not, it left distinct weaknesses on offense where they failed in the draft and had no cap to round out the team.

But they soon managed to sign Cousins and struck gold with Diggs. That left the OL. They could only afford mid-low tier FAs. So the draft became critical. A combination of not picking high enough (obviously RS saw other needs and value) and the picks bombing has left things the way they have been.

Elf was a big strikeout in terms of needing him to pan out.
Isadora was a 5th so slim chance there.
Bradbury is all but a formal bust.
Samia, nothing.
Cleveland is tracking as a marginal player, yes out of position.

Turning to the latest acquisitions, echoing the offseason there was little chance both Darrisaw and Davis would start and be playing well. Sure they could start because there was only trash to overcome, but to also play well? That would have required luck and good fortune. As it stands, neither have seen the field and IMO any projections for them are out the window.

Playing amateur Sat morning historian, Elf - and the way he was handled - was perhaps the most pivotal pick.

He ended up playing all three interior positions over three years before he became a no-excuse bust. If he had panned out at G right away, perhaps Cleveland would have played tackle. That would have meant going in another direction besides Darrisaw. Conversely, they may have not drafted Davis (which one day we may wish they hadn't). And they probably still would have drafted Bradbury, the little bowling ball who gets bowled over.

Actually the above is trumped by two things set in stone:
1. RS only uses real assets to address glaring OL weaknesses after a minimum of two years of festering, although sometimes he upgrades from band-aids to bailing wire.
2. A RS OL draft pick is likely to be a bust.

RS Commandments

Thou shall trade away higher draft slots to mass many low round picks who will become camp fodder.
Thou shall sign gimmicky players and people like Brock Lesnar, someone who can jump a stack of tires, and a German WR for spring entertainment.
Thou shall pay huge contracts to former Vikings Pro Bowlers who are clearly on the decline because they did good things in the community.
Thou shall take at least a two-year wait and see approach to any given OL woe.
Thou shall trade away first and second round picks for players who end up making no difference or only play five games.
Thou shall be enamored with Kurt Cousins, and sign off on the first-ever 100% guaranteed contract then pile more cap money on it.
Thou shall draft OL poorly.
Thou shall idly watch formerly good FG kickers go downhill.
Thou shall retain pictures of the Wilfs with sheep.

Unfortunately, a lot of real good stuff Bill.

Wish it wasn’t true … hope things bend awkwardly and defy the patterns you are calling out: after all, its not written in stone that Darrisaw, Davis, Cleveland, Hill, Udoh will be subpar …

only that, after one game in a new season, they have dovetailed into the ongoing trend from previous seasons.

We'll see. They could all improve slowly or even suddenly have an epiphany and play lights out … my money is on Cousins sprouting a third leg and scuttling around pass rushers like a disjointed robot spider.

Refresh my memory. Did Cousins lead the Vikings to tie the game in the last 2 minutes? And then drive us to winning FG range in OT before Cook fumbled?

Cousins led us to a field goal. Heineke led them to a TD where Kirk would have got us to a field goal making the final drive one of desperation needing a TD to go ahead vs a FG. Just my opinion of course.
