SOD. My favorite draft pick br far.

Especially when you consider his QB at Iowa was crap. Several of those plays, he had gotten wide open only to have to slow up and wait for the ball and the DB to get there.

That could explain why I saw him making so many contested catches.

Also he won't have the #1 CB on him....which would explain the tight coverage too.

The Vikes probably are only needing 20-30 catches from a third WR. 150-180 from Thielen/JJ. 40-50 from Irv. 30 to Cook.....so 100 catches from the rest?

You really think the coverage he faced at Iowa was better than what he will face in the nfl?

Really.

Still easier to catch a pass against a third corner when the other two on the field are the focus (Thielen/JJ). He was the main weapon at Iowa and there is this:

Oct 21, 2020 — Senior Ihmir Smith-Marsette led Iowa in receiving yards last season, and lines up at receiver, it's likely Smith-Marsette will be double-teamed.

I've watched a ton of A&M games and was really underwhelmed by Mond early on. He's picked it up over the last season and a half, though and his accuracy has gotten considerably better. He had a bad habit of being a little too geeked up and overthrowing receivers w/ that cannon. Jimbo Fisher did some good work w/ him towards the end.
I really like where we got him. He's a bit of a late bloomer who could stand to sit a season (or two), but has all the skills to be a starter. We'll see. I'm optimistic.

Same.

I don't have giant expectations, though. Most likely Mond is a career backup. He has the physical skills. In college he improved every year, and his biggest execution flaws can be coached out. But I keep hearing that his decision-making skills need work, and that's not something that usually improves dramatically.

But as an injury sub, he'll pressure a defense. And supposedly he's unusually good at the X's and O's analysis on the sidelines. So... solid career backup, with a small chance of becoming a legit starter if he can improve his on-field processing. Maybe 5%? Early 3rd round? I'll take it.

Plus he'll likely have two years to develop without getting his confidence blown. It's a good situation for him.

For the most part I think that is a fair assessment. I think, given his talent and ceiling, the 3rd round was a great place to get him. It’s worth taking a shot at someone who has Mond’s upside in round 3. Especially in a year when you have 4 third round picks.

Teams do find starting QB’s after the first round. It comes down to how well did they scout them. Did the Vikings get a Russell Wilson? Dak Prescott? Kirk Cousins? Did they get one of the many long forgotten project QB’s taken in the middle rounds over the years, who maybe got in a couple of games when the starter got hurt before disappearing from the face of the earth? I don’t know what his percentage of becoming a starting QB is, but 5% seems kind of light to me. I can guarantee you though, that if in his first year as a starter, he puts up the same numbers as a certain QB that I won’t name, people will be ecstatic because he is shiny and new and doesn’t make 30+ million a year.

Nate Stanley looks pretty good in these, as well!

When I watched the Marsette Highlight I saw a player good at catching contested passes who seemed to have to catch far too many contested passes. In a highlight reel particularly shouldn't he be getting wide open?

If he's willing to work and learn, he's got two very good route runners to help him get wide open to learn from.

I expect Marsette to make the team and maybe even be our #3 eventually. I just am not too excited regarding him at this point. When I watched JJ highlights last year he was almost always wide open.

He can return punts...

so He can contribute there right away.

And in the attached highlights above he was open a lot.
I wouldn't expect JJ level burst onto the scene, but I do think he will be a big part of our offense eventually.

Is this based on his zero punt returns at Iowa? He literally never even caught a punt in a game in college, so why why the declaration of certainty that he can contribute as a punt returner right away?

I am optimistic about him and all the draft picks, as I always am because I'm a fan, but we don't have to embrace fiction or fantasy. The Iowa State RB is very fast, but for some reason couldn't get carries in college...in spite of being a very fast one-cut runner. Maybe he'll be great, maybe he'll be a poor man's Michael Bennett. Smith-Marsette has actual game production to base optimism on, but never as a punt returner. But people tout the pick based in part on his immediate impact as a punt returner (not just you). I have to say I don't get it.

Question to the team? Who will handle Punt Returns this year? I actually have no idea?

That is if the Vikes use 3 wr sets more this year.

I vote for that lucky dog Smith-Marsette who has been granted a 10 yd bubble of free nfl space.

Much easier to concentrate.

It's really much more of an issue than KO return, and I don't have any idea. It could be Smith-Marsette, Beebe, Hughes (why not?), Osborn if he's shown anything in the offseason, etc.

Ihmir Smith-Marsette - The Daily Iowanhttps://dailyiowan.com › 2020/10/21 › ihmir-smith-mar...
Oct 21, 2020 — Senior Ihmir Smith-Marsette led Iowa in receiving yards last season, and lines up at receiver, it's likely Smith-Marsette will be double-teamed.

Never said the corners where better than NFL corners. Said that he was facing a third corner and wasn't going to be double teamed....read into it what you like.

The coverage he faced in college was tighter (as the #1 WR at Iowa) than what he’ll face in the nfl as the #3 wr?

So ... we should expect to see him more wide open in the pros than he was at Iowa?

Thats not me reading into anything ... that’s simply your line of reasoning.

I’m just curious to see if you are going to double down on this ...

Yes...if you are a Def cordinator will you focus will be on JJ/Thielen/Irv or the Rookie.

Also again who was the #1 WR at Iowa? Was he double teamed?

If you watched the Vikings last year which WR's had the easiest time getting open on third down? (Bisi and Beebe) because coverage rolled to where Thielen/JJ were and Bisi/Beebe were against the 3rd or even at times 4th corner.

That is if the Vikes use 3 wr sets more this year.

So....the answer is, double down, yes.

Smith - Marsette hilights... This was what we needed. PUMPED

Lengthy hilight reel.. but worth it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pR7m07KLqA

Whop Philyor
Chad Beebe
Mike Hughes
KJ Osborn
Kene Nwangwu
Blake Proehl

A very uninspiring group

Sign a free agent that could pass as a 4th or 5th WR

Jamal Agnew
Tavon Austin
Tyler Ervin
Pharoh Cooper
Andre Roberts

I vote for that lucky dog Smith-Marsette who has been granted a 10 yd bubble of free nfl space.

Much easier to concentrate.

Patrick Peterson

Really.

After the Twilight Zone commercial break, watch the goalposts move. Credit to the set directors.

For the epilogue, see the vaunted triple down morph into a death spiral.

Okay. I see what you are saying. You are saying that ISM wasn't the focal point of their offense and didn't receive special attention.

I thought you were arguing that it would be harder to go against Vikings NB Chris Jones(1 on 1) than Northwestern's Newsome with safety help or many other Power 5 number 1's with safety help.

No, you still don't. And like Phil, I can tell you would never admit it if you did.

Wasn't even a full-time starter in 2020. Played in 7 games, started 4. maybe the other three games had to do with injuring himself while flipping into the endzone against Wisc or forfeiting playing time for drunk driving ... not sure ...

but no, I don't think defensive coordinators were pulling their hair out designing exotic coverages to minimize his lackluster number of RECs

I DO think he had a minimum of chances at Iowa and I DO hope he's a better WR in the Pros than he was in college. As well as a decent KR.

I don't need to warp the realities of college and pro football to do so.

Nate Stanley looks pretty good in these, as well!

Really.

So Tom you think 20-30 catches for him/Bisi/Beebe isn't reality and is too obtuse?

I apologize. My frustration is directed at the team, more than at anyone in here.
